Tournament anglers see sponsorship as the Holy Grail, the path to free entry fees and piles of free product. While all of that is possible, the reality is there is more to a sponsorship partnership than exchanging jersey space for cash and products. Sponsorships are like any job; you start out at the bottom and work your way up. Along the way you must prove yourself, work well with others, have good communication and stay professional at all times. However before you can get to that point, you must first develop the relationship, build trust and show your worth. It's go time.

With all the facets of media these days, we are constantly blasted with sales pitches for one "top-notch fishery." Others claim, "You can catch a hundred fish a day here." Or, "Trophy smallmouths roam these waters." And my personal favorite is, "If you want to catch the fish of a lifetime, this is your place." Unfortunately, few fisheries live up to the hype. It's fair to say that with the exception of a few, typically all the hoopla turns out to be false advertising. Reason being, the true lunker lakes, the hidden gems, the fisheries that do hold fish of a lifetime, are by and large well-kept secrets. Anglers don the persona of pirates when it comes to these fisheries. They smirk at others who are ignorant to what lies just down the road as they hoard all the treasure for themselves. This level of secrecy makes it almost taboo for a writer to as much as utter the name of certain lost lakes. >>> read more
Local Reeltown pro Kelley Jaye received a phone call last week that most of us only dream about. He was extended an inviatation to fish the Elite Series. As you might expect, he didn't hesitate to accept. We gave him a call to congratulate him on this milestone and chat for a few minutes.
I asked him when he decided it was time to give the big leagues a shot? Jaye says, "I didn't seriously think about fishing on this level until a couple years ago when the Bassmaster Elite Series All-Star Event was on Lake Jordan. It's one of my favorite lakes to fish. My wife and I watched them fish and went to the weigh-ins. After seeing the event in person, I really thought I could compete with these guys." >>> read more
Climbing to the top of the leader board is nice. But can you sell a crankbait? That's what bass fishing sponsors want to know in today's competitve marketplace. The pressure can make for an uneasy relationship, at best. Pros are often being asked to do more for less money, and at a time when they cannot afford to lose a sponsor; Manufacturers expect more, pay less and are quick to pull a deal off the table at the slightest sign of a balk on the behalf on an angler. >>> Wired2Fish offers more

Anglers have come from all over to take their best shot at Lake Norman during Toyota Trucks Bonus Bucks Owners Tournament. A couple of names on the roster are very familiar. Hank Cherry and Carson Orellana, both of North Carolina, just won the 2012 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open on Alabama’s Smith Lake (Cherry in the pro division and Orellana in the co-angler division).
